Thursday 13: PR: Reservoir - a solo exhibition by Hanneke Benadé in the Reservoir at Oliewenhuis Art Museum Opens Tonight
2011-10-13Reservoir is the title of Hanneke Benadé’s latest exhibition which opens at 19:00 on Thursday, 13 October 2011 in the Reservoir at Oliewenhuis Art Museum.

The 44 artworks for the exhibition Reservoir were inspired by and created specifically for this space. The etymology of the word Reservoir is of French origin and means storage. The title refers not only to the specific location where the exhibition takes place, but it also serves as a metaphor for humans as reservoirs or storage vessels. Hanneke explains “… soos ‘n reservoir water stoor in groot hoeveelhede vir lang periodes, so word al ons drome, verlange, herinneringe en gedagtes opgesluit binne-in onsself vir ‘n leeftyd.” There is notably a water theme in the artworks which ironically is reinforced by the absence of water in the once serviceable, working reservoir at Oliewenhuis Art Museum which has served as an exhibition space since November 2002. Hanneke Benadé is known for her masterful use of dry pastels and all the works on display were created in this medium.

Hanneke Benadé matriculated at the Pro Arte High School in Pretoria in 1989 and then completed a BA (Fine Art) at the University of Pretoria, focusing on graphic printing, and more specifically on lithography. After completing her degree, she lectured at the University of Pretoria and the Open Window Art Academy, before deciding to practice art full time in 1994. At this point Hanneke participated in various group competitions and art competitions and won various prizes including merit prizes in both the Sasol New Signatures and the Absa Atelier Art Competitions. Her first solo exhibition, Local Girls, held in Johannesburg, was followed by more national and international exhibitions. In 1999 she stayed for three months at the Cité des Arts Internationale in Paris, France. She then worked as co-manager of the Mind’s i Gallery in Johannesburg after which she moved to Cape Town. There she exhibited regularly at the Everard Read Gallery and I Art Gallery, as well as the Strydom Gallery in George. In 2003 she received a Brett Kebble Art Award. In 2006 Hanneke moved to Robertson in the Western Cape where she still resides. For her exhibition Crossroads at the 2008 Klein Karoo Arts Festival, she received two KANNA awards. In 2009 and 2010 respectively, Hanneke was curator of the Landskappe and -heems exhibitions at the Klein Karoo Arts Festival. In 2010, she visited the lithography studio A’telier Jean Pons in Paris, France where she worked with Babette Pons to create three lithographic prints as part of the Rendezvous, Focus Lithograph Project.

The Reservoir exhibition will open at 19:00 on Thursday, 13 October 2011 in the Reservoir at Oliewenhuis Art Museum. At 10:00 on Friday, 14 October 2011, Hanneke will present a guided tour of her work in the Reservoir. This promises to be very informative for students and artists and those interested in pastel as a medium should not miss this opportunity.
